Biathlon at the 2018 Winter Olympics and mixed relay
Mixed relay is one of the more recent additions to the Winter Olympics. What this event means is that the team is made up out of 50% women and 50% men. Compared to regular relay, women and men work together as a team. It became an Olympic event 2014, so it's quite a newcomer. The reason for introducing mixed relay is that the request for mixed events became great. And it has quickly become a popular addition. The competing women ski a course at 6 kilometers, while men ski 7,5 kilometers. So, in general, it's a combined variation of regular relay.
Each single contestant gets to shoot twice, once prone and once standing. Each stop provides eight shots divided on five targets. A miss equals an extra 150 meters of skiing. That's why it's of great importance to be focused while shooting. Compared to the other individual events, it's the combined success that marks the outcome during relay. It's by nature a team effort and the skiers are being judged as representatives of a country. Since mixed relay is one of the later events of the Winter Olympics, spectators have usually been able to form an opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of the individual athletes. But the outcome might surprise and mixed relay might become a very exciting event. Since it represents the unity of the Olympic Winter games, it has become a very popular event and will definitively be a part of future games.
