Irfan KT qualifies IAAF World Championship 2019 and for Tokyo 2020
India opens its account for the upcoming Olympic event, as the first Indian athlete qualifies for the Tokyo Olympics. It happened on March 17, when Irfan KT finished 4th at the Asian Race Walking championship in Nomi, Japan. In the 20km walking race, Irfan clocked 1:20.57 thereby registering the standard mark of I hour 21 minutes for qualifying for the next Olympics.
The star Indian athlete was also able to get into the IAAF World Championship due to be held later this year in Doha, with his 4th-place finish.
The qualification for the Tokyo 2020's marathon and walk events started from 1st January, 2019 and will continue till May 31, 2020. For the remaining athletics event, the qualifications started from the 1st of May this year. As said earlier, the Kerala-based athlete is the first Indian athlete to qualify for the Tokyo extravaganza.
Back in the 2012 Olympics, Irfan clocked 1:20:21, which is a a national record till this day. Also at a national 20km walk race event earlier this year, he clocked 1:26:18 to win the race. Although, Irfan might be the only Indian to qualify for the Olympic event but he's not the only Indian to qualify for the IAAF World Championships as Ganapathi Krishnan and Devinder Singh were also able to achieve the feat. They had earlier finished fifth and second respectively in the national 20km walk race event.
Now, let’s get back to Irfan, after the 2012 Olympics, this will be the second Olympics appearance for the star Indian athlete. Another thing, he along with Rakesh Babu was suspended from the Commonwealth Games earlier in 2018, for violating the 'no needle' policy, after a syringe was discovered by a cleaner in their room in Gold Coast.
