Alavés next manager after Asier Garitano
Who is Alavés manager Asier Garitano?
Asier Garitano is the current Deportivo Alavés manager after being appointed in May 2019. Garitano was born on 6 December 1969 in Bergara. He previously played football as an attacker for clubs around Spain such as Eibar, Alicante and Athletic Bilbao’s reserve team.
After coming through the youth academy at Athletic Bilbao, he then played for Athletic Bilbao’s reserve team, Eibar, Cartagena, Cádiz, Gavà, Racing Ferrol, Burgos, Alicante and Benidorm on loan. He made 352 competitive appearances and scored 85 goals between the years of 1989 and 2003. Garitano also made an appearance for the Spanish u18 National team along with a lone appearance for the Spanish u20 National team failing to score in either stint.
He then went into management after retiring in 2003 becoming the assistant manager of Alicante in the same year. He worked at Alicante for 5 years before being made manager in 2008 and left the role the following year. In April 2010, Garitano was appointed the manager of CD Castellón where he struggled and therefore suffered relegation with the side. Garitano joined Orihuela CF as their permanent manager in July 2011 and then CD Alcoyano in 2012 where he made the playoffs at both clubs.
In June 2013, Garitano joined Spanish third division side CD Leganés where he gained promotion in his first season at the club. Garitano then gained promotion to the Spanish top flight in 2016 after finishing second in the league. Garitano was recognised as a hugely impressive manager by Real Sociedad as he was appointed as their new manager in May 2018. Whilst at the club, he brought in Mikel Merino and Theo Hernandez from Newcastle United and Real Madrid respectively who were both highly sought after at the time but lost young right back Álvaro Odriozola for £27m. However, he was sacked by the club in December of the same year due to disappointing results.
Garitano was appointed as the manager of Deportivo Alavés in May 2019 after taking a few months out of football as he replaced Abelardo who resigned the previous day. Alaves have signed Lucas Perez and Joselu from West Ham and Newcastle respectively along with signing Aleix Vidal on loan from Sevilla. They’ve spent £9m so far this summer and will want to impress this season after finishing 11th in the last campaign.
