American Song Contest will premiere on Monday 21 March, 2022, during a two-hour primetime extravaganza on NBC in the States.

Hoping to siphon off some of the magic of the beloved six-decade-old show Eurovision Song Contest, which draws over 200 million viewers to its grand finale, the premise for The American Song Contest will remain similar to the European version. Professional musical artists — solo singers, duos or groups up to six members — from each of the 50 states and across every musical genre will perform all original songs on the live televised event.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has trusted Swedish production company Brain Academy with the exclusive license for the format to be shopped in the U.S.

"Outside of sports, the Eurovision Song Contest is the biggest TV show on Earth, it unites a continent and everybody gets to vote," said Peter Settman, CEO and creative director of Brain Academy. "We can't wait to introduce this wonderful competition to the biggest TV market in the world. TV/video audiences are getting bigger every year so this is the perfect time to bring this exciting show to the American public."

The announcement of the U.S. version follows the August 2017 confirmation of another spinoff, Eurovision Asia Song Contest, licensed to SBS Australia as a one-night competition currently consisting of 17 Asian-Pacific countries set to compete, including China, India, Japan and the United Arab Emirates. However, a launch date has yet to be confirmed.

To export the contest born on the Old Continent to the United States, European producers rely on Ben Silverman, the producer of the American version of “The Office” but also of the weight loss contest “The Biggest Loser” (Le biggest loser).

“I've been trying to put together this project for 20 years,” Ben Silverman told Variety magazine . “As America is more divided than ever, with so many challenges, what really brings us together is our culture. "

The format, as it is currently conceived, will position the artists head-to-head against other states’ representatives in a series of televised qualifier competitions, leading to semi-finals and the ultimate primetime Grand Finale March Madness-style. Propagate Content will create The American Song Contest Academy, a group consisting of music professionals based in the U.S. that represent all genres and backgrounds, from which juries of artists and music industry notables who, along with the regional audiences, will select top talent from all 50 states to compete.

The Eurovision Song Contest has had many fans in the USA for several years. In 2016, the cable broadcaster Logo broadcast the final of the ESC for the first time. Even the former President Barack Obama knows the ESC, as he revealed during a speech in Germany that same year . US stars like Justin Timberlake and Madonna have also had their ESC moments - sometimes more, sometimes less magical.

American Song Contest 2022 is set to take place before the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.
