The AFC Asian Cup is an international association football tournament run by the AFC. Where the winning team becomes the champions of Asia and qualifies for the 2021 FIFA Confederation Cup. The 2019 AFC Asian Cup will be the 17th edition of the AFC Asian Cup. This edition will be the first time that 24 teams will participate in the finals instead of 16. The tournament will start on the 5th of January and end on February 1.

Group D consists of four teams including three-time Asian Cup winners Iran. The other teams are – Iraq, Vietnam, and Yemen.

Iran is one of the big names in Asia. They remained the highest-ranked team in Asia from December 2014 until May 2018. Iran has qualified for a World Cup five times including the last two editions. In the last World Cup, their performance was praised even though they failed to go past the group stages. Iran has played in every Asian Cup since 1968. They previously won the trophy three times in a row (1968, 1972, and 1976) but since then, they have failed to reach the final of an Asian Cup. They are currently ranked 37th in the FIFA World Rankings.

Iraq is one of seven current AFC members to have won the continent's most desirable trophy, the AFC Asian Cup. They won the trophy in 2007 by beating Saudi Arabia in the final. The triumph was described to be one of the football's greatest fairytale victories. They have been part of only one FIFA World Cup in 1986. This will be Iraq’s 9th appearance in an Asian Cup. They are currently ranked 89th in the FIFA World Rankings.

Vietnam is one of the four teams to have played in the first two Asian Cups. Since then, they have failed to play in every other Asian Cups except in 2007. They reached the Quarter Finals in that edition. This edition will be Vietnam’s 4th appearance in an Asian Cup. But they have failed to qualify for a FIFA World Cup in their history. They are currently ranked 102nd in the FIFA World Rankings.

Against all the difficulties in their country, the Yemen national team has managed to qualify for the Asian Cup 2019. This will be Yemen’s first ever appearance in an Asian Cup after many attempts. But they are yet to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. The football association of the country has not been able to function properly due to other problems, they are currently ranked 133rd in the FIFA World Rankings.
