Who is Athletic Bilbao manager Gaizka Garitano?

Gaizka Garitano Aguirre is the current Athletic Bilbao manager after taking over in December 2018 from Eduardo Berizzo who was sacked in the same month. Garitano was born in Bilbao, Spain on 9 July 1975 and is 44 years of age. Gaizka Garitano played football before going into management as he made competitive appearances for clubs around Spain such as Real Sociedad, Deportivo Alavés, Eibar and Ourense.

Garitano came through the youth academy of Athletic Bilbao in 1989 before making his reserve team debut in 1993. He stayed at the club for 5 years making 1 loan move in 1996 to Lleida where he made 14 appearances. For the Athletic Bilbao reserve team, Garitano made 112 competitive appearances and scored 24 goals before moving to Spanish second division side Ourense in 1999. He moved to Eibar in 2001 where he made 146 appearances for the club and was named club captain in the 2004-04 season.

In 2005, Garitano made his Spanish top flight debut for Real Sociedad aged 30 years old. He stayed at the club for 3 years making 81 competitive appearances before moving to Deportivo Alavés in 2008 before retiring the following season after making 29 appearances in his lone season at the club.

After retiring, Garitano went into management at Eibar going straight to the assistant manager of the club. He then managed the B team in 2010 before being made the permanent manager of the first team in 2012. Garitano took the club through 2 successive promotions which landed him a new contract in 2014 after the club secured their top flight status. However, after being relegated in his first season back in the first division, Garitano resigned from the club and joined Valladolid in July 2015 replacing previous manager Rubi. Garitano then had spells at Valladolid and Deportivo La Coruña before rejoining Athletic Bilbao as their reserve team manager.

In December 2018, Garitano was appointed as manager of Athletic Bilbao where he guided the club to an 8th placed finish and a round of 16 appearance in the Copa Del Rey. At the end of the season, Garitano signed a new contract keeping him at the club until Summer 2020. Next season, Garitano will hope to build on his successful time at the club with aims of a higher league position at the end of next season.
