In his playing career, Artell won the EFL League Two playoff final with Crewe Alexandra in 2012 along with finishing runners up in the second division in 2001 when he was at Rotherham United. He never properly retired from football, however, he moved slowly into management whilst still playing for Bala Town in 2014 where he became the academy operations manager for Crewe Alexandra. He stayed at the club and slowly worked his way up the ladder until he made his break in 2017.
In January 2017, Artell was appointed Crewe Alexandra manager after replacing former manager Steve Davis. The club was on the brink of relegation before Artell famously said "relegation means oblivion... they'll end up in the Conference North on £200 a week with a job as a milkman." After he said this, Crewe managed to win more games and climb their way out of the relegation zone. The club ended up finishing 17th after a phenomenal second half to the season.
Artell built on this, finishing 15th the following season, the club was slowly beginning to rebuild after years in the EFL League Two. The season after that, the club finished 12th and Artell is still looking to build on that. So far at Crewe Alexandra, David Artell has won many Manager of the month awards and he’ll want to keep winning them if he is to improve his reputation as a manager. The fans will hope the board will invest some money into the squad this summer as they look to build towards another strong league finish this season. Artell is known as a brutal manager and a brave manager, this Crewe team will need that this season.
