Lee Bell – Manager Crewe Alexandra

Lee Bell is a former footballer who played as a midfielder and is presently the manager of Crewe Alexandra. He started his professional career at Crewe Alexandra and later played for Burton Albion, Mansfield Town, and Macclesfield Town before eventually returning to Crewe and Burton Albion.

Professional Career

Bell joined Crewe Alexandra on a professional basis in 2001 after graduating from their academy programme. His performance at Crewe quickly won him a fresh contract in February 2003. In the 2002–2003 promotion campaign, he made 22 appearances, largely as a substitute. However, injuries prevented him from making regular appearances. He was loaned to Shrewsbury Town in 2003 and Burton Albion in 2005. He finally left Crewe in 2007 making a total of 53 appearances and scored 3 goals.

Bell went on trial at Mansfield Town after leaving Burton Albion. Bell joined Mansfield Town in August 2007 following a successful trial. In the 2007–2008 season, he played for Mansfield in 27 games before suffering a severe knee injury in February 2008 kept him out for the most of the remaining games.

Bell joined Macclesfield Town on a one-year contract after leaving Mansfield Town when they were relegated to the Conference National at the conclusion of the 2007–08 season. Over the course of his two seasons there, he featured in over 80 games and scored three goals.

In May 2010, Crewe Alexandra re-signed him to a two-year deal. Bell served as one of the three regular club captains for the 2010–11 campaign. Throughout the 2010–11 season, he continued to play for the team, appearing in 44 league games. He also played a crucial part in the club's 2011–12 run to the playoffs.

Following his second departure from Crewe Alexandra, Bell underwent a trial at Burton Albion. Bell signed a one-year contract with Burton Albion in 2012 after a brief trial. In his first full season with the team, Bell played in 43 games. Bell was awarded the club's Player of the Year title in April 2013 and received a new one-year contract as a result.

Bell was chosen to serve as the new club captain for the 2013–14 campaign. Bell was again awarded with a one-year contract extension after making thirty-four appearances for the team for the second time in a row. Due to a knee injury, Bell missed the beginning of the 2014–15 season. As a result, Bell saw limited first-team action and made only one substitute appearance.

Bell, 32, retired from playing in the summer of 2015 and rejoined Crewe as under-18s coach before being elevated to under-18s manager in January 2017 amid a coaching reshuffle.

He was then appointed as under-23s manager in March 2022, and when Alex Morris was promoted to permanent manager in April 2022, Bell was named Morris' assistant manager.

Bell was named Crewe Alexandra's interim manager in November 2022 after Morris resigned. Bell was hired on a permanent basis on December 1, 2022. Chairman Charles Grant said: “I’m very pleased that Lee has accepted the position of First Team Manager. His driving ambition and clear objectives, allied with his deep understanding of Crewe Alexandra and strong relationships with existing staff, made him the standout candidate.”
