Who will win the 2019 FA Community Shield?

The FA Community Shield is a competition contested by the previous season’s Premier League and FA Cup winners. Last season, however, Manchester City won both of these competitions and therefore their opponent will go to the second placed team in the Premier League which was Liverpool. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will be going into the tie as favourites but Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League winning side Liverpool will believe they have what it takes to win the 2019 FA Community Shield.

High spending Manchester City won last year’s Premier League, the FA Cup and the League Cup to complete a historic treble for Pep Guardiola’s side. They finished in first place in the Premier League last season on 98 points which was a huge achievement in itself meaning they have won the past two Premier League titles.

The 2019 League Cup final was contested by Manchester City and Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea FC, the final score was 0-0 after extra time and the game went to penalties. Manchester City won the penalty shootout with Bernardo Silva impressing and winning the man of the match award, but the game was surrounded in controversy however as Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted for penalty specialist Willy Caballero in the dying minuted of the game. Manchester City then went on to beat Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup final on May 18th in Wembley stadium to complete their historic treble.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side finished second in the Premier League last season on 97 points which was only 1 point behind eventual winners Manchester City. Liverpool went the whole league season with only 1 loss which was also to Manchester City. However, the Reds won the UEFA Champions League beating fellow English side Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final to win the prestigious competition.

Both of these teams will believe they can win the 2019 FA Community Shield as they’re arguably the two most in-form teams in Europe and will both want to add an extra piece of silverware to the trophy cabinet. If either team can add to their already impressive squads this summer, then they’ll be in a much better position to win the 2019 FA Community Shield. Defending champions Manchester City who won the 2018 FA Community Shield beating Chelsea 2-0 with Aguero scoring both goals in the match will go in as favourites but Liverpool won’t be far behind.
