Imanol Alguacil was born on 4 July 1971 in Orio, Spain. Alguacil is the current manager of Real Sociedad after having been appointed in December 2018. Previously, Alguacil played football as a right back for clubs around Spain such as Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Cartagena and Burgos.
In 1988, Alguacil came through the youth academy at Orioko FT and then joined Real Sociedad before making his first reserve team appearance in 1989. He made his debut for the first team in 1990 where he made 113 competitive appearances for the club across 8 seasons and scored 7 goals. In 1998, Villarreal signed Imanol Alguacil where he stayed at the club for 2 seasons, scored 1 goal and made 29 appearances for the club. In 2000, Jaén acquired the services of Alguacil before moving on to Cartagena the following season. In 2002, Burgos signed Alguacil where he retired in 2003. Alguacil made 3 appearances for Basque Country between the years of 1994 and 1997 where he failed to score a goal.
After retiring in 2003, Imanol Alguacil took some time out of football before joining Real Sociedad in 2011 as a youth team coach. He worked in the role for 2 years before being appointed as the assistant manager of the Real Sociedad reserve team in 2013. In 2014, Alguacil was appointed as the full time manager of the Real Sociedad reserve team. Alguacil was appointed as caretaker manager of the first team in March 2018 until the end of the season where the club finished 12th in the league. Following the conclusion of the season, Alguacil was appointed as the reserve team manager once again.
In December 2018, Alguacil was appointed as the full time manager of Real Sociedad after Asier Garitano was sacked from the job. In his opening few months at the club, Alguacil guided the club to a 9th placed finish in La Liga following a disappointing few results at the start of the season.
