Who will win the 2019 UEFA Super Cup?
Traditionally, the Champions League winners are the favourites going into the UEFA Super Cup’s, but this year Chelsea will believe they have an excellent chance to beat Liverpool to win their second ever UEFA Super Cup. Liverpool will also believe they can win the cup after winning the UEFA Champions League last season. The 2019 UEFA Super Cup will be the 44th edition annual competition and it’s the first time ever that it’s being contested by two English clubs.
Liverpool qualified for the 2019 UEFA Super Cup by winning the 2018-19 Champions League. After finishing second in their group which contained French Champions PSG, Italian side Napoli and Serbian League Champions Red Star Belgrade. In the round of 16, they faced German Champions Bayern Munich and won 3-1 on aggregate to go through. In the next round, they faced FC Porto and easily disposed of the Portuguese Champions with a convincing 6-1 aggregate scoreline.
FC Barcelona were Liverpool’s semi-final opponents, the first leg finished 3-0 to Barcelona thanks to ex Liverpool striker Luis Suarez scoring one and Lionel Messi scoring two including one astonishing free kick in the 82nd minute. Everyone thought Liverpool were dead and buried, they were facing a 3 goal deficit without star players Mohammad Salah and Roberto Firmino.
Somehow, Jurgen Klopp’s men defied the odds with Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum scoring two goals each to sink Ernesto Valverde’s FC Barcelona. They then went on to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the Champions League final to round off an incredible season where they went toe to toe with Manchester City in the Premier League. Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea won the Europa League after topping their group which included PAOK, Vidi and Bate. They then reached the final by beating teams such as Dynamo Kiyv 8-0 on aggregate, Slavia Praha 5-3 on aggregate and then Eintracht Frankfurt 4-4 on aggregate and winning on penalties. They dominated most games including the final where they beat Unai Emery’s Arsenal 4-1 to crown themselves Europa League Champions. Whether Chelsea will still have manager Maurizio Sarri or someone else is still to be seen but they’ll have to appoint well if they’re going to win the Super Cup. This year’s UEFA Super Cup final is guaranteed to be a huge game and will be very exciting with both teams wanting to add one more bit of silverware to the trophy cabinet.
