The Academy Awards are prizes for artistic and technical achievement in the film industry, popularly known as the Oscars. It is considered to be the most prestigious and valuable award in the film industry. The awards are provided annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), as determined by the Academy's voting membership, which are international acknowledgments of distinction in cinematic achievements. A model of a golden statuette, officially described as the "Academy Award of Merit" is awarded to the different category winners, but more generally referred to by its nickname, the "Oscar." The statuette portrays an Art Deco style rendered knight.
George Stanley initially sculpted the award from a design sketch by Cedric Gibbons. At a private dinner held by Douglas Fairbanks at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, AMPAS first introduced it in 1929 at what would become known as the 1st Academy Awards. The first radio broadcast of the Academy Awards ceremony was in 1930 and was televised for the first time in 1953. It is the oldest ceremony for worldwide film awards that is now worldwide live broadcast. It is also indicated as the oldest of the four major annual American entertainment awards; its equivalents are modeled after the Academy Awards-the Emmy Awards for television, the Grammy Awards for music, and the Tony Awards for theater. In the world of entertainment, they are commonly considered as the most popular and prestigious competitive prizes.
The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony, recognizing the best films of 2019, was held on February 9, 2020. As for the previous ritual, no-host remained. They publicized the ceremony on ABC. It was presented for the 18th consecutive year at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. This ceremony was the first time in Oscar history that there were ten or more nominees for more than three films. Since its inauguration in 1929, a total of 3,140 Oscar statuettes have been awarded.
Awards of Merit Categories
The Best Directing award was classified into two categories, such as Drama and Comedy, in the first year of the ceremonies. The Best Original Score award has also been divided into different (Drama and Comedy / Musical) categories at times. The Art Direction (now Production Design), Cinematography, and Costume Design awards were also separated into two categories such as black-and-white films and color films from the 1930s to the 1960s. The award for Production Design was called Art Direction, and the award for Makeup and Hairstyling was called Makeup until 2012.
The Academy revealed in August 2018 that some categories would not be broadcast live, but would instead be recorded during commercial breaks and displayed later in the ceremony. There was followed by a variety of proposals that the Academy had announced but did not adopt (including the initiation of a Popular Film category).
93rd Academy Awards
Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the 93rd Academy Awards carnival will honor the best films screened between January 2020 and February 2021. It is expected to take place on April 25, 2021, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. Originally set for February 28, 2021, but the ceremony was delayed by two months, due to the pandemic of the COVID-19 on cinema.
