Time's Person of the Year 2024

Time is one of the world’s most widely-read weekly news magazines. It’s got a circulation of more than 2 million and it has even more online readers thanks to its website as well, so when Time announces its annual Person of the Year, it’s a big deal.

The Person of the Year is arguably Time’s most famous feature. It began as Man (or Woman) of the Year back in the early 1920s when the magazine first began publishing, and it’s traditionally reserved for the one person that’s made the most impact on the world over the last 12 months. The Man or Woman of the Year gets the honor of being presented on the cover of a special issue of the magazine with much of the issue dedicated to how and why they made such a difference in the past year.

Yet it’s not always the person that made the most positive change over the last 12 months that gets to see themselves on the cover. Both Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler have been named Man of the Year because of how their many heinous actions changed the course of history. At the same time, heroes such as Mahatma Gandhi, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Martin Luther King, Jr. have all graced the cover of Time at one point or another, offering a fine counterpoint. In fact, the balance of those that have been chosen as Man or Woman of the Year throughout the 20th century were usually on the right side of history.

In 1999, Time retired the “Man of the Year” format and instead began calling the honor the “Person of the Year” instead. This change was made to modernize the title. Over the years, the honor has been bestowed upon more than just single individuals, too – for 2020, Time selected both President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris together as the two who made the largest difference in the year. Meanwhile, their defeated opponent, President Donald Trump, was awarded Person of the Year himself in 2016 after his first election win.

The field is wide open for who will be selected Time Person of the Year for 2024.
