Football in Spain
They say that football (Spanish football) is like a religion in Spain. Spain has a great history of football, probably only England and Italy won in terms of football heritage. Real Madrid is the most successful football team in Europe, although their statistics build up with the sponsorship of General Franco during the 1950s. The very end of the previous season, especially in the Champions League and Europa League, in a way showed what can await us in this season in Spanish football leagues. Seville has shown that it is the sovereign ruler of the Europa League, winning the sixth title of this elite international competition. On the other hand, it can be said that the two strongest Spanish clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, have humiliated themselves last season in the Champions League. Football experts, but also fans of both clubs, agree that the play of these two teams in the strongest European competition was simply not satisfactory. However, neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid would be where they are, that is, at the very top of world football, if they did not know how to rise from the ashes. Can they do it again?
Real Madrid was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League for the first time in ten years. However, Barca suffered a shocking defeat in the quarterfinals, losing 8: 2 to the later Champions League winner – Bayern Munich! After this match, there was a big football earthquake and changes in the Catalan club, and we all know very well what was going on. All in all, the teams had enough time to think about everything and get ready for the new season of the domestic championship. Because, La Liga is more than these two dominant football clubs.
The La Liga season 2020/21 officially began on Saturday, September 12, 2020, and will end on May 23, 2021. The 2020/21 La Liga season is the 90th consecutive Spanish national league competition. Twenty clubs are fighting for the most prestigious trophy in Spain.
The current defender of the title is Real Madrid. It is the 34th record title for this club since its founding. However, the novelty is that this season in the La Liga we have three new clubs that have placed in the elite of the Spanish domestic championship from La Liga 2. In the first place, it is Cadiz, who is returning to the La Liga after 14 years of absence. The other team that qualified for the La Liga in the 2020/21 season is Huesca. The third club to qualify for the La Liga is the winner of the Segunda’s playoffs FC Elche. This team enters the La Liga after 5 years of absence.
Real Madrid are main candidates for winning the title this season. They have good start, they won in the first El Clasico and they look more complete as a team than the other teams. Atletico Madrid this season looks more serious in the intentions of winning the title and this may be their year as Real Madrid and Barcelona aren’t as dominant as they used to be. Barcelona has one of the worst season start in last 10 maybe 20 years. Messy stayed in Barcelona but the things there are not settled.
Considered all, the Primera League season 2020/21 will bring us, as every year, numerous interesting matches.
La Liga 2 is getting more popular every year. It still can’t be compared to English second football rank (Championship) but LaLiga 2 has some different charm. Espanyol, Rayo Vallecano, Mallorca S.Gijon are all clubs that were competing in La Liga in the past few years. It will be very interesting to see who will come out on the top and who will get promotion to LaLiga at the end.
Copa del Rey is probably 3rd by rank football competition in Spain. It’s a competition where mostly the smaller clubs, clubs from lowers leagues are trying to impress and to compete against the greater and most famous teams. Current champion of the competition is Valencia and most titles has Barcelona – 30.
Football in Spain is different, it's fulfilled with passion, South American aggression and charm. There are many rivalries and every round, every week there is a derby match in Spain that takes our attention.
