Champions League 2019/2020: Which team will win group E?
Who will win the UEFA Champions League Group E?
This season’s Champions League Group E consists of defending champions Liverpool FC, Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg and KRC Genk. The favourites to win the group will be Liverpool, but Napoli is a very strong side and will push them all the way.
Liverpool had an extremely strong 2018-19 season, they won the UEFA Champions League and finished second in the Premier League behind Manchester City, for this reason, they’re in pot 1. The club have numerous world-class players such as Alisson, Virgil Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. However, in the recent transfer window, Liverpool made little to no progress with their squad and they could be worse than last year.
Italian side Napoli finished second in the Serie A last season after pressuring Juventus the whole way and guaranteed their spot in pot 2. Napoli has brought in Hirving Lozano and Kostas Manolas to add to their already impressive squad which includes the likes of Dries Mertens, Allan and Kalidou Koulibaly. Their head to head matches against Liverpool will be vital if they are to secure top spot.
Red Bull Salzburg won the Austrian League last year after dominating for the majority of the season which put them in pot 3. Notable players who play at the club are Zlatko Junuzović and Antoine Bernède who both run the midfield. However, Red Bull Salzburg look like they’ll struggle to push for the top spot and they will more than likely fight KRC Genk for the third spot and qualify for the Europa League knockout stages.
KRC Genk won the Belgian League in the 2018-19 season which put them into the fourth pot for the group stage draw. The club will be unlikely to take any points off Napoli or Liverpool, however, they have a great chance to finish third in the group if they can beat off fierce competition from Red Bull Salzburg.
Last season, Napoli and Liverpool were in the same group. Liverpool finished second whereas Napoli finished third. In the head to head matches, Liverpool won their home match 1-0 whereas Napoli won their home match 1-0. Both teams will have a great chance to win the group, however, Napoli could be favourites as they’ve brought in many quality players in the past transfer window. KRC Genk and Red Bull Salzburg will be unlikely to take points off the bigger 2 clubs and may have to settle for third and fourth place.
