Who is Valladolid manager Sergio González?
Sergio González was born on 10 November 1976 in L'Hospitalet. González was appointed by Real Valladolid in April 2018 and previously played football in midfield professionally for clubs around Spain such as Espanyol, Levante and Deportivo La Coruña.
Sergio González came through the youth academy at Mercat Nou Magòria and Hospitalet in 1994. González broke into the first team in 1995 at Hospitalet where he made 6 appearances scoring 2 goals in the process. Towards the end of 1995, Espanyol acquired the services of González where he joined their reserve team and made 104 appearances for the club. González broke into the first team at Espanyol in 1998 and made 110 competitive appearances for the side and scored 5 goals.
In 2001, González left Espanyol and joined Deportivo La Coruña where he made 294 competitive appearances and scored 27 goals during his 9 year stint at the club. In 2010, Levante brought in González where he only made 14 appearances in his lone season at the club before retiring from club football in 2011. However, González made 11 appearances for the Spanish National team between the years of 2001 and 2005 along with 15 appearances for the Catalan National team between the years of 1999 and 2013. Over the course of his playing career, González won the Copa del Rey in the 1999-2000 season in his time at Espanyol. After González joined Deportivo La Coruña, he won the Copa del Rey in 2001-02, the Spanish Supercup in 2002 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2008.
Sergio González started his managerial career in 2013 where he joined Espanyol’s reserve team as an assistant manager. González was promoted to the manager of the reserve team in 2014 before being appointed as the first team manager in the same year. In 2015, González was appointed as the Catalan National team’s manager where he worked for 3 years as he joined Real Valladolid. In González’s opening season at the club, he finished 16th in the La Liga campaign which was a success after a tough relegation battle. Next season, the club will likely be in another relegation battle, however, the board will hope González can keep the club in La Liga. The club has spent 900k on one player in Pablo Hervías, they’ll hope he’s key to their upcoming campaign.
