Who is Mansfield Town FC manager John Dempster?
John Dempster is the current manager of Mansfield Town after being appointed in May 2019. Dempster was born in Kettering, England on 1 April 1983. Previously, Dempster was a footballer playing at centre back for clubs around England such as Oxford United, Kettering Town and Crawley Town over a 14 year long career.
Dempster started his career at Rushden & Diamonds in the Football League where he made 66 competitive appearances and scored 4 goals for the club from 2001 to 2006. He then moved to Oxford United in the January transfer window where he made 23 appearances for the club. In 2007, Dempster moved to Kettering Town in 2007 where he won the Player of the Season award as he captained the side to promotion. He made 183 appearances for the club scoring 21 goals before moving on to Crawley Town in 2011 for an undisclosed fee. In the opening season, Crawley Town managed to gain promotion to the Football League, however, Dempster was released from the club in May 2012.
Mansfield Town permanently signed John Dempster in 2012 after making a loan move the previous season. He made 69 competitive appearances for the club scoring 2 goals over a 3 year period where he captained the side on numerous occasions. During his time at Mansfield Town, Dempster was sent out on loan to Tamworth in 2012 where he made only 6 appearances in a disappointing loan move.
John Dempster qualified for Scotland as his father was from Ayrshire, Dempster made 1 appearance for the Scottish under 21’s side in 2004. Dempster also made the squad for the England C team in 2006 but failed to make an appearance. Across his career, Dempster won many trophies and titles including the Football League third division in 2002-03, the Conference North in 2007-08, the Conference Premier in 2010-11 and in 2012-13.
In 2014, Dempster moved into a managerial role at Mansfield Town where he took charge of the academy until 2018 where he became the caretaker manager following the resignation of Steve Evans. David Flitcroft was announced as the permanent manager in March 2018 but John Dempster replaced him in May of the following year after Flitcroft was sacked by the club. Dempster has played for many clubs around England and his experience will be hugely important for a club like Mansfield Town in the upcoming season.
