Fortuna Düsseldorf next manager after Friedhelm Funkel
Friedhelm Funkel - The Ascender
Whoever hears the name Friedhelm Funkel rightly thinks of his sporting success as a coach instead of his career as a player - and that even though he has won neither a trophy nor a championship so far. Funkel has an unspectacular career as a midfielder behind him. In 1985 he won the DFB cup with FC Uerdingen, for which he played for 14 years with a short interruption, and otherwise ended his player career without trophies. Besides Uerdingen he also played for 3 years in Kaiserslautern and spent his youth at VfR Neuss.
His coaching career, which began in 1989, was more impressive. His six years as co-trainer and coach at Uerdingen, which he trained from 1990 to 1996, also stand out here. Furthermore Funkel was coach of Hansa Rostock, the 1st FC Cologne, VfL Bochum and seven other teams, which played predominantly second-class.
Exactly here, however, lies the record that Friedhelm Funkel holds. No other head coach has been promoted to the First Bundesliga as often with teams as the coach from Neuss. Altogether 6 times he managed to help teams from the second Bundesliga to the promotion. At the beginning of the 90s he was promoted twice - with the club now renamed KFC Uerdingen 05. Further promotions followed with MSV Duisburg, 1. FC Cologne, Eintracht Frankfurt and last but not least with Fortuna Düsseldorf. He also accompanies Fortuna as coach in the current season of the First Bundesliga.
