When he left the club was on the second position in Scottish League1. In Octomber 2016 he was appointed as manager of the St Mirren a club that was fighting for survival in Scottish Championship. He managed to keep the team in the championship and the next 2017-2018 season he managed to win the first place in this league and to promote the club to the Scottish Premier League. He won the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year award for 2017–18 and of course many clubs wanted to sign him. Among them were and Ipswich Town and Sunderland. When he was offered Sunderland job he accepted it without hesitation. He also had been offered a new deal by the Saints, but he cannot turn down an offer from Sunderland.

Although the competition in the League One for the promotion is tough, Sunderland under new manager has shown discipline and passion to win the promotion and to start bringing back the team to the top of English football the Premier League.
