First Match Premier League 2019/2020 - Manager of Tottenham
Mauricio Pochettino replaced Tim Sherwood as the Tottenham manager in the summer of 2014 after an impressive stint in his short time at Southampton. The Argentine manager was the tenth Spurs manager over a span of 12 years. As they say tenth time is the charm (they don’t really), Pochettino transformed the North London side into genuine title contenders.
The 44-year-old took big risks which paid off, the biggest one being the replacement of Roberto Soldado with young Harry Kane, who has now bagged over 70 goals. Pochettino favours high-pressing attacking football and he has now assembled one of the most complete teams in the Premier League and they are certainly in the mix for the top four spot this season.
At present, Pochettino is absolutely contented in his role at the White Hart Lane and, considering his recent five-year contract extension, it is unlikely that the club hierarchy are even looking for alternatives.
In his short managerial career, which started with Espanyol in 2009, Pochettino has proved himself as one of the best young managers in world football. Sooner or later, he might get an offer he wouldn’t be able to refuse. If the Spurs match their performances of last season until the end of this season, a move away from the Lilywhites could be on the cards for Pochettino.
Prior to Pochettino’s appointment at Tottenham, Frank de Boer was one of the favourites to land the job. Recently, De Boer was sacked from the helm at Inter Milan after a series of abysmal performances. The Dutch manager would be a frontrunner for the job alongside the former PSG manager – Laurent Blanc, who is also in search of a club to manage.
The current Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel would also give a serious thought before turning down the lucrative job at one of the big teams in England. It is unlikely that the club’s upper brass would give a chance to the former Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs, but it is understood that the Welshman would grab the opportunity in a heartbeat.
