Augsburg next manager after Martin Schmidt
Martin Schmidt - From Switzerland to Germany
The football career of the Swiss Martin Schmidt before his coaching career can be described as clear. Born on April 12, 1967 in Naters, Switzerland, he played in the youth club FC Nantes. Already at the age of nine he learned to kick here and remained loyal to the club beyond that.
Until 1998 - 22 years - the Swiss played football here. FC Nantes played in the 3rd league of Switzerland at that time, which, however, is only seventh class due to the league formation in the men's area there. Here he accompanied the club up to the second highest division, which at that time was still called National League B. Schmidt's active career as a footballer came to an end at FC Raron, where he played from 1998 to 2001.
It was here that his career as a coach began. Initially an assistant coach, he was named head coach of FC Raron in 2003. In 2008 he took over the second team of the Swiss first division team FC Thun for two years. After that he came to Germany to train the 1st FSV Mainz 05 II for five years. His greatest success with the second team of the Mainz club was his promotion to the third league.
In February 2015, he took over the first team during the season, which he helped qualify for the Europa League a year later. The termination of the contract with the Swiss followed in 2017, as he was only just able to keep the first class with the FSV Mainz. A short intermezzo was the Swiss's time as a coach at VfL Wolfsburg. Already after half a year he had to leave due to a lack of sporting success. After a break of over a year, he took over the stumbling FC Augsburg in April 2019.
