Who will win the UEFA Champions League Group G?

This year’s Champions League Group G consists of Zenit St Petersburg, SL Benfica, Olympique Lyon and RB Leipzig. Although it’s thought of as one of the weaker groups, there will be plenty of competition for the top spot and could end up being the most competitive of the 8 UEFA Champions League groups.

Zenit St Petersburg won last year’s Russian League as they dominated throughout the season as they were allocated pot 1. They had a busy transfer window as they spent over £40m on Malcom from FC Barcelona. Along with the rest of their strong squad which consists of Sebastián Driussi, Branislav Ivanović and Artem Dzyuba, they could mount a strong challenge for the top spot in the group.

Portuguese pot 2 side SL Benfica won last year’s Primeira Liga after a title challenge as they were pushed all the way by FC Porto. Although they’ve lost their star youngster Joao Felix, they have Raul de Tomas and Carlos Vinicius from Real Madrid and Napoli respectively. The club has spent £40m in the transfer window and they’ll hope this shows in the upcoming campaign. These new players will have to impress alongside solid players in the squad such as Pizzi, Ruben Dias and Alex Grimaldo.

Olympique Lyon finished third in last season’s Ligue 1 campaign which saw them placed in pot 3. The club sold star midfielder Tanguy Ndombele to Tottenham Hotspur, however, they managed to keep hold of Houssem Aouar, Moussa Dembélé and Memphis Depay. The club also used the Ndombele money to sign Jeff Reine-Adélaïde, Thiago Mendes and Ciprian Tătărușanu. Lyon will be desperate to finish first in the group and show off their new young talent.

RB Leipzig finished 3rd in last season’s Bundesliga as they were placed in pot 4 for the group stage draw. The club has numerous class players such as Emil Forsberg, Ethan Ampadu, Kevin Kampl, Dayot Upamecano and Timo Werner. These players will want to impress and show their worth in the upcoming Champions League group stage.

All four of these teams have many young players and could all finish first, RB Leipzig could be the favourites to finish first alongside Lyon although being 4th and 3rd seeds respectively. But this group will be extremely difficult to call and could be one to watch throughout the course of the Champions League group stages.
