Michael Flynn is a former professional footballer and the current manager of Swindon Town. Born on 17 October 1980 in Newport, Wales, Flynn had a career as a midfielder, playing for several teams, including Newport County, Wigan Athletic, Gillingham, and Bradford City, among others. He retired from playing in 2018 and went on to become a football manager, with his first appointment being at Newport County in 2017.
Flynn started his professional career at Newport County in 1999, where he made 20 appearances and scored four goals. He then moved on to Barry Town in 2000, where he scored an impressive 12 goals in eight appearances before returning to Newport County for a brief stint, where he scored one goal in three appearances. He then played for Barry Town again in 2001-2002, where he scored 12 goals in 12 appearances, catching the eye of Wigan Athletic, who signed him in 2002.
Flynn played for Wigan Athletic for three seasons, making 37 appearances and scoring two goals. He also had a brief loan spell at Blackpool in 2004, where he made six appearances but failed to score. Flynn then moved on to Gillingham in 2005, where he had a successful spell, making 97 appearances and scoring 19 goals.
He then had another spell at Blackpool, where he made 26 appearances and scored three goals, before moving on to Huddersfield Town in 2008, where he made 25 appearances and scored four goals. Flynn had a brief loan spell at Darlington in 2008, where he made four appearances but failed to score. He then moved on to Bradford City in 2009, where he made 91 appearances and scored 10 goals. Flynn ended his playing career at Newport County, where he made 82 appearances and scored five goals over three seasons.
After retiring from playing, Flynn went into football management, taking up the reins at Newport County in 2017. During his tenure, he led the club to the League Two playoffs in the 2018-19 season, where they narrowly missed out on promotion to League One. Flynn also masterminded a giant killing in the FA Cup in the 2018-19 season, where Newport County defeated Premier League side Leicester City 2-1 in the third round. In January 2022, Flynn left Newport County and joined Walsall as their new manager.
In March 2023, Flynn resigned from his position at Walsall to become the new manager of Swindon Town. His appointment at Swindon Town was seen as a major coup for the club, given Flynn's track record in management and his success at Newport County. Flynn's first task at Swindon Town will be to lead the club to promotion to League One after they narrowly missed out on a playoff place in the 2022-23 season.
